Do 'gun nuts' fall for the bright and shiny sales pitch??
I was thinking last night about how us 'gun nuts' often look to the newest and shiniest(although it is often in tacticool black) weaponry when in the end tried, true but 'boring' works just as well...
We were given a .38 S&W snubby, now this is as dull as you get when compared to the whizz bang pistols available BUT it seemed to kill people with monotonous regularity for DECADES....I mean think about it with advancements in ammunition the .38 works just fine. However we all need to buy the newest highest capacity semi auto that is out there.... Same with rifles....and shotguns. What do y'all think??? |
Re: Do 'gun nuts' fall for the bright and shiny sales pitch??
I must admit that I have more than my share of tacticool firearms but the gun that I keep at the ready to defend my home and family is an old Ruger Police Service Six 4" .357 because I know it will go bang and I know I'm decent with it.

Re: Do 'gun nuts' fall for the bright and shiny sales pitch??
Thats what I mean....people kind of ignore the tried and true and perfectly capable of killing pistols in favor the new and incredibly 'cool' new toy...
To me if it worked for 30+ years killing bad guys it probably will work now, people didn't get harder to kill. Although perhaps the layers of fat on most humans now might actually slow down bullets. |
Re: Do 'gun nuts' fall for the bright and shiny sales pitch??
I've always been with the tried and true.
S&W snub nosed .38 S&W 9mm S&W .40 Springfield 1911 .45 12ga pumps AK47s All of the S&Ws are stainless and will last longer than a lifetime. Having a Glock or a Sig does not impart super powers. |
Re: Do 'gun nuts' fall for the bright and shiny sales pitch??
I would prefer to have .357 revolvers simply due to their versatility.
Rifles I will have in both .223 and .308 due to the availability of ammo. Magazine compatability is the reason I now have an AR instead of the .223 AK I had previously. Shotguns is to me a no brainer,870 or 590....common as crap and plenty of different barrel lengths out there. And thats it I think. Oh a .22 as well. |
Re: Do 'gun nuts' fall for the bright and shiny sales pitch??
My Model 12 shotgun was made in 1937 and I paid $300 for it.
My Rem 700 Hvy Barrel BDL I've owned for twenty five years. My CZ52's were made in 1952. My wife's Taurus .357, she has owned for 11 years. About the only 'new' weapon I've purchased lately was a Rossi 2" .357 and my AK47 Draco pistol. That's about it. And BOTH of those fill what I considered to be a hole in our armory. My wife gave me the money to buy them. Especially the 2" Rossi as it's in HER caliber. Just because it's new doesn't mean YOU GOTTA HAVE IT. At least I DON'T. |
Re: Do 'gun nuts' fall for the bright and shiny sales pitch??
The only hang up I got is fancy shotguns. I can do without all the black plastic fully auto military weapons that I see everyone going nuts about. I've got 2 Mini 14's. That's it. All the rest of my rifles are bolt action and for hunting. If the time comes in this country that I need more than that to battle some UN troops or something it will be time to leave anyway and get to a safer place.

Re: Do 'gun nuts' fall for the bright and shiny sales pitch??
Your point about ammuntion is very accurate.
The developements in ammo in the last 15yrs has abour equalled the field in leathalty in my opinion. Reliablilty and capacity are ,if not, more important to me. E-A |
Re: Do 'gun nuts' fall for the bright and shiny sales pitch??
i think its our tendacys as gun nuts to want the newest/biggest/baddest/coolest new hardware and if a persons budget allows i dont see a issue with it.
I have lots of "Fun" "cool" stuff but when the rubber meets the road my C&C gun is a 38sp s&w snubbie |
Re: Do 'gun nuts' fall for the bright and shiny sales pitch??
I'm embarrassed......yes, when I was much younger. A few things though have stood the test of time and I'm glad to have them now. Properly cared for, I'm sure they will still function long after I'm gone.
Take care, Mod1 |

Re: Do 'gun nuts' fall for the bright and shiny sales pitch??
I don't know. Someone's got to be buying all that stuff, but I don't see much of it out at the shooting range. I'm not much of a gun snob. I like milsurp rifles, and my favorite pistols have always been 1911s. My favorite 1911 is an old WWII RCAF Colt that I got from my dad who got it from a friend who got it from who knows where. My favorite rifle is my M1A and I do have an AR15, but other than that, I don't have anything too expensive or fancy, and I still have my first rifle, a Remington Mohawk .22, that my dad gave me in 1971.

Re: Do 'gun nuts' fall for the bright and shiny sales pitch??
I love the .38 special! The .38 has killed a lot of bad guys. Furthermore, If all I had was a .38 revolver with a 4" barrel to use for self defense, The attacker would have 6 bullets in his head.

Re: Do 'gun nuts' fall for the bright and shiny sales pitch??
As I stated,I would prefer a .357 simply because of the versatility but a free .38 is hard to pass up....:applause_

Re: Do 'gun nuts' fall for the bright and shiny sales pitch??
All I really care about is cheap ammo and high magazine capacity.
Which is why I love a Glock. you can 17 round 19 round (+2 mag extender) or 33 rounder all can fit in 19,17 and 26 models THAT IS NASTY COMBO.........and not to many other pistols can match up. T |
Re: Do 'gun nuts' fall for the bright and shiny sales pitch??
Why does high cap matter really?
If oyu can't kill the enemy with 6 shots you are in deep doodoo... |
Re: Do 'gun nuts' fall for the bright and shiny sales pitch??
To add,a pistol is almost the last level of defense...
I would hope to never be armed with a pistol in firefight. |
Re: Do 'gun nuts' fall for the bright and shiny sales pitch??
If the intruders are in your home, you simply use a shotgun....forget a pistol.

Re: Do 'gun nuts' fall for the bright and shiny sales pitch??
Rules for a Gunfight
Anonymous 1. Bring a gun. Preferably, bring at least two guns. Bring all of your friends who have guns. 2. Anything worth shooting is worth shooting twice. Ammo is cheap - life is expensive. 3. Only hits count. The only thing worse than a miss is a slow miss. 4. If your shooting stance is good, you're probably not moving fast enough or using cover correctly. 5. Move away from your attacker. Distance is your friend. (Lateral and diagonal movement are preferred.) 6. If you can choose what to bring to a gunfight, bring a long gun and a friend with a long gun. 7. In ten years nobody will remember the details of caliber, stance, or tactics. They will only remember who lived. 8. If you are not shooting, you should be communicating, reloading, and running. 9. Accuracy is relative: most combat shooting standards will be more dependent on "pucker factor" than the inherent accuracy of the gun. Use a gun that works EVERY TIME. "All skill is in vain when an Angel blows the powder from the flintlock of your musket." 10. Someday someone may kill you with your own gun, but they should have to beat you to death with it because it is empty. 11. Always cheat, always win. The only unfair fight is the one you lose. 12. Have a plan. 13. Have a back-up plan, because the first one won't work. 14. Use cover or concealment as much as possible. 15. Flank your adversary when possible. Protect yours. 16. Don't drop your guard. 17. Always tactical load and threat scan 360 degrees. 18. Watch their hands. Hands kill. (In God we trust. Everyone else, keep your hands where I can see them.) 19. Decide to be aggressive ENOUGH, quickly ENOUGH. 20. The faster you finish the fight, the less shot you will get. 21. Be polite. Be professional. But, have a plan to kill everyone you meet. 22. Be courteous to everyone, friendly to no one. 23. Your number one option for personal security is a lifelong commitment to avoidance, deterrence, and de-escalation. 24. Do not attend a gun fight with a handgun, the caliber of which does not start with anything smaller than "4". 25. You can't miss fast enough to win. |

Re: Do 'gun nuts' fall for the bright and shiny sales pitch??
38 special is actually weaker in many loading than 9mm. The longer case is largely empty. Go compare ballistic charts.
Many people who whine about how weak and ineffective 9mm is in stopping power are often ignorant their 38 loading is often weaker. I have a Ruger SP101 5 shot in .357 mag and my wife has Taurus 5 shot 38 special in her night stand. The felt recoil of a Glock 9mm vs. the weaker 38 special is less and this allows me to pile in more rounds faster and waaaay more accurately than with the wheel gun. So greater accuracy, more stopping power and higher fire power. Then again I have seen many people fumble with any handgun at ranges over the years. You really need to practice - practice - practice. Take some classes and get some training to get rid of your dangerous and bad habits. Sign up for some fun shoots at your local ranges where you have to shoot in front of other people. Trust me . . . this is a life skill and needs to be deeply embedded into your muscle and neurological memory whenever the bad guys show up. Get the job done safer and quicker with less risk to the neighbors and other family members. This is one reason I'm a fan of 9mm. The ammo is cheaper = more practice for the same $. It's easier to shoot well than many other calibers including 38 spcl. Back when I worked for Loomis Armored years ago the management was very messed up. Many of the 38 spcl pistols that where being carried has cheesy low power full metal jacket practice ammo and many of the pistols where tired worn out S&W that needed to be retired. And the make matters worse they sold off all the shotguns because they didn't want to bother to train the employees. Lets just say I carried my Glock 23 in my lunch box when I drove. Many other employees carried other weapons of all sorts. Now they carry Glocks and I think management has been completely revamped. It was a fun job and I frankly enjoyed being on full scan for a robbery or hold up. If I didn't have two business that I run from home I'd consider going back. :driver: |

Re: Do 'gun nuts' fall for the bright and shiny sales pitch??
Depends what kind of scenario you are concerned about.
Me, I was never that concerned with some burglar, in that case I'd like some cheap revolver or shotgun because I wouldn't care if the cops took it. I used to keep a fairbairn-sykes by my bed and I slept fine, never owned a gun. But in a firefight with real people wearing armor and using light infantry weapons 38s and SKS's, nagants, etc are woefully obsolete. Even the semi-auto versions of AK-47 and 74, ar-15 and are of limited use, they were not intended to be semi-auto weapons. They are under powered so they can be controlled under automatic fire. Probably the only thing you can legally own that would be worth much in that situation would be a semi-auto .308. But if I had to get stuck with a pistol in such a situation I'd take my Glock 10mm over a .38 or 1911 any day. When you are outnumbered you need to put heads down and old weapons don't do that too well. You also don't want something that bounces off light cover or get caught fumbling with a speed loader or stripper clip. The FBI learned this back in the 80s, they don't carry revolvers anymore. |
Re: Do 'gun nuts' fall for the bright and shiny sales pitch??
I certainly hope none of my neighbors are keeping .308 battle semi auto battle rifles in the ready for the bad guys for home defense. Even a .223 or 7.62 x 39 is plenty bad enough for taking out the neigbors sleeping baby. God forbid anything happen where any family member gets hit with a stray round or even one that over penetratts the bad guy.
If you live by yourself out in the wide open spaces, no family member sleeping in the room 2 doors down, then have at it using the .308 Battle rifle. People you need to think about this! What is potentially behind your target? If your so terribly concerned about the intruders having body amour . . . . then you need to train for head shots. Get your self a reliable actuate 9mm auto and train for this. |
Re: Do 'gun nuts' fall for the bright and shiny sales pitch??
Who are the "bad guys" REALLY?
What kind of bad guys wear armor? Jog your mind a bit. |

To go up against these types of thugs you need to be awake before they enter the house preferably before they approach the house so you can be ready. You need some sort of early warning system. Be prepared for your life to change forever weather you survive this type of assault or not. Not trying to break my arm patting myself on the back but even I with my background, marksmanship with all my military weapons training etc. . . . I would be hard pressed to walk away unscathed even at the top of my game. I hope it never happens. Lets just say back when G. Gordon Liddy was popular on talk radio back in the early to mid 90's or so this was talked about openly on the show. Time to think about something else now . . . happy thoughts . . . :marchmell |

Re: Do 'gun nuts' fall for the bright and shiny sales pitch??
What is the purpose of a vehicle? To get you from point A to point B, correct? I make 6 figures a year. My Dodge pickup truck gets me around just fine. Now, let's say I made 7 figures a year. Would my pickup still do the trick? Hell yes it would. But, if I've got the money to burn, why not get that flashy sports car that costs as much as a small house? :yippee:
The same could be applied to just about any product, whether it be a CD palyer VS and iPod or one gun VS another. To each his own. |
